Cultural Programs
SBCS Fun Run is the school-wide event for all teachers, students, TAs, and families. It is organized by the Parents Association (PA). This is the School’s key fundraiser event, typically held in November. It provides a fun opportunity for sponsors and families to raise funds and support the Chinese education at the school. Besides stretching and running, the older students and TAs will also compete in tug-of-war games against the staffs and parents. Families’ enthusiastic support has consistently raised thousands of dollars for SBCS. The funds raised will be used toward the School’s cultural functions and for operational costs not covered by tuition. All donations are tax-deductible.
Pen Writing Contest is a competition for all SBCS students to perform Chinese characters in writing. Each student will be given a question sheet with a set of Chinese characters in respect of his or her Chinese background level. Student then write these Chinese characters with limited amount of time, monitoring by his or her teacher. The judges will evaluate students’ writing for neatness, formation, clarity, and punctuation. Contest follows the guidance provided by Southern California Council of Chinese Schools (SCCCS). The top winners at each level are eligible to represent SBCS at the SCCCS level.
This is an entertaining event where SBCS families come together to celebrate the most important festival in the traditional Chinese culture in a year. Students perform dances, songs, short drama pieces, Kung Fu, Taichi, among other shows. Traditional theme Chinese games and snacks are offered as well. Families enjoy 3 hours of fun time together.
Each year SBCS holds a poetry contest! Please come prepared and ready to make a poster to a good theme, paper provided but bring your favorite art supplies. The Theme is given and the kids make the magic.
Each year, SBCS winners represent SBCS to compete in the Southern California Councils of Chinese School (SCCCS) council-wide Fall Academic Competitions in Arcadia. It is an amazing experience for the students to see so many fellow Chinese learning students like themselves working hard for the events.
