MANDARIN CLASSES FOR A BEGINNER said 1/2/2014 1:35:06 AM :
First of all, thanks for contacting us.

Our school has an open enrollment policy, so please feel free to join in anytime. This month, due to the holidays, there is only 1 more school day left (12/14), & the school will resume 1/11/14.

Your daughter, naturally, should start learning some basics at the Kindergarten level. It is not uncommon to see first time learners at age 7 or even 9 or 10. There are 3 choices: Cantonese, Mandarin (traditional), or Mandarin (phonetics). Alternatively, she may want to start at the Mandarin Conversation class to ease into the basic curriculum.

We are a non-profit volunteer-run Saturday school, holding classes 32 weeks in a school year. Please look for our office from 9am -12noon on most Saturdays, at the PVHS campus (at 600 Cloyden Rd, PVE). The office is between the main gate & the football field, next to a small parking lot, behind a small dolphins mural.

I hope we have answered your questions. If not, please feel free to let us know.

Thanks for the inquiry!

This MC class is taught by Queenie Qu Laoshi who is already experienced teacher in what's required of students in level 2 class. As such, she is aware of needs for beginners from 1st -> 2nd -> 3rd level of Chinese.

In this class, she focuses on speaking & listening, & places less stress on dictation & sentence structures.

Session 1 - teach new words to say

Session 2 - practice using of these words

Session 3 - use game time to recap what's learned

Dear Family A,

Thank you for taking the time to inquire, and we hope that you are enjoying the last days of a wonderful summer.

Aside from our traditional skill level-based classes, by popular demand, we have expanded our Conversation Classes; we believe that young Mr. A will find not only an enriching language and cultural learning experience at SBCS, he will also find many of his PVIS friends on campus!

The Admin staff will be happy to guide and place our new students on 9/7. Definitely come meet us at the FDR on PVHS campus when SBCS opens on 9/7!

The Principals will also be available to answer more detailed questions for you, and may be in touch with you sometimes next week when they return from the summer break.

Hope to see you soon!

I am writing regarding my son who is entering grade 8 in PVIS and has been enrolled in Mandarin Chinese since grade 6 in the middle school. We are not native Chinese and therefore he does not have any opportunity to practice outside of the classroom.

We are interested in your Saturday program at PV high if it would be appropriate and helpful with his studies and learning.

I look forward to receiving more information from you via return email or phone.

WHICH CLASS IS GOOD FOR MY 10TH GRADE SON? said 1/2/2014 12:52:40 AM :
Thank you so much for looking us up.

Congratulations, your son is quite an achiever! His ability to move onto Chinese 3H at such a young age proves it.

Since this will be his 3rd year, having good background & communication / writing training, he is welcomed to try Chinese Levels 7 (L7) or even 8/AP I (L8/AP I) in our school. We offer up to Level 9/AP II for the advanced students.

He'll get to broaden his training by learning in a slightly different perspective in our Chinese school than in traditional high school, & also participating in Chinese community events sponsored by our school.

If interested, it is $600 an entire school year for a min of 96 hrs of classroom (small size) training with students at his level.

Other cost will include:
$40 Parents Association Fee
$25 Textbook cost (Both class happen to have same cost)

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL? said 1/2/2014 12:24:07 AM :
SBCS welcomes your Family!

Hi A,

Sophie forwarded your email. Thank you for all the good questions!

May we introduce ourselves: My name is Alice also, John Chen and I are the Co-Principals this year for SBCS. We’ll answer your questions.

So what do I do next? :) Should I come to PV High on a Saturday prior to Day 1?

No, school opening ceremony is at 9am, @ the MPR (Multi-Purpose Room) on 9/7/13, at PVHS.

Do I have a choice if my girls learn simplified or traditional characters? (I would prefer traditional, since our family is in Taiwan.)

Please click here for Basic Registration Package

I’ve also attached the teacher’s & class list.

Please email paperwork back by Sept 3 (ok to bring in person on day 1), we’ll place your daughters in the skill appropriate (vs. age) class where our teachers will provide an initial assessment. There may be some movement in the first couple weeks, for student to be placed in the most appropriate class.

What happens on the first day of school?

We’ll discuss your class choice with new families, and direct families to the recommended classroom. See above.

Will I receive a packet of info in the mail or on Day 1?

All families receive a Student Handbook on Day 1.

If we receive the 5-page form before Sept 3, you should also be notified of the class/name of teacher/classroom #/etc. by Sept 5. If not, we’ll share info on opening day.

Will Day 1 be a drop-off day or do the families generally stay with the kids?

Teachers will post their policies to their students. Only a couple of our teachers prefer no adult/parent in class.

Generally, families do stay for as long as they desire, esp. the first day.

Hope this has answered your questions. Please feel free to bring up anything else that is not clear.

We are new to on-line registration, so, your input will help us improve.

Thank you!

REGISTER TWO STUDENTS ONLINE? said 1/2/2014 12:20:43 AM :
you are very welcome!

there is no deadline for registration, although the sooner the better, so that the admin team can prepare textbook orders, etc. to make for a smooth start for all students.

at this time, please register your children individually online. all due discounts, such as sibling discount, will be adjudicated and refunded to you at the school office once school starts. thank you for this feedback so that our web team will continue to fine tune our registration programming for the website.

for Shutterfly, you would create your own personal ID and password to register. please let us know if you encounter issue.

please stay tuned for forthcoming communication from the Principals regarding our finalized school calendar, which usually mirrors that of PVPUSD schedule.

One more question--if I want to register two students online, do I need to do two separate transactions? I don't see the option to choose "2". And is there a deadline for registration? We are still solidifying our fall plans...

And is there a password for the Shutterfly site?

Thank you so much! :)

about 200 students. You'll find our school offering intimate interactions
as students or as parents/volunteers - not too big but not too small.

We are currently enjoying summer break as a Saturday school til late Aug or

Hi A,
I believe I just spoke with you, as there are not very many parents with triplets. Wow, big job you have!

I'm Alice, this year's Co-Principle. As I related to you, the skill level may not be very important:

1. Our teachers are very skilled in handling splits level kids with a wide age span, etc.

2. Our summer program is week by week, & is designed to provide flexibility to the families busy Summer schedule, yet have a fun environment for learning Chinese language & culture when they are in town. It may not need a lot of language skill to execute simple command.

3. They'll get to meet other kids who are either just learning or have learned the language to give them something to think about in this era of believing learning Chinese is the way to go.

4. Actually, summer school being in a very small class setting. Is a great way to start them off for more training down the line...

Hope I answered most of your concerns, & looking forward to you dropping by to visit & meet us!

Im copying our "sunmer" team for them to chime in of they have additional thoughts or experience to share & to help you choose.

SHE WILL START IN THE MOMMY AND ME CLASS? said 1/1/2014 11:10:24 PM :
Dear J,

Thanks for looking us up, & for your interest in supporting your daughter
through Chinese language learning.
You are right, for anyone under 5 years old, our current option is the mommy
and me class in our extracurricular program. In December 2013, before she
turns 5 in Jan, we can transition her to our Kindergarten class to start

As the regular classes, the extracurricular program follow the school
schedule (unless noticed otherwise).
Attached are our school 2 page calendar (for 2 semesters) for your
reference. We have just completed week 8 in Spring Semester.

Our mommy and me class is priced at $220/32 classes (1 hr per class).
Application Form attached. The Prorated rate will be $55 for the rest of
the school year. As for our regular Chinese lessons, tuition is $600 per
year (2 semesters), plus $40 Parents Association Fee. Textbook fee varies,
and school uniform (T-shirt) is optional.

Last, would you please let me know how did you find us? (Friend, website,

IS THE CLASS TAUGHT ONLY IN MANDARIN? said 1/1/2014 11:03:27 PM :
Dear L,

Thanks for looking us up! Our school have evolved over the years, so it is
a great question you have about our Phonetic track.

When you refer to traditional character, I assume you are referring to
Zhuyin (bo po mo fo)? Or, are you referring to Pinyin (phonetic) but using
traditional characters?

I think I can try to answer for either:
Our classes are either zhuyin or pinyin, starting at K level up to level 2.
It is after students reach level 3, their classes are taught in both styles.
Thanks for explaining to us your young son's accomplishment in Chinese
learning & the background. We do group students by skills before age. So,
he may be ready for sentences or even writing short paragraphs. This will
be accomplished via our level 2 classes.

Thanks for inquiring about the language immersion style. We have teachers
with varying styles, which we offer them autonomy. While some are very
straight with Chinese only, some are more lenient. I can say with certainty
that the higher the levels, the more exclusive that only Chinese is being
used in the classroom.

Please continue to send your questions. We hope to meet you in person one
day soon when you can sit in with your son for a free trail and see which
level he feels most challenged in. As a volunteer trying to run this art of
language and in a non-profit environment in SBCS, I look forward to future
interactions with parents like you - knowledgeable and hands-on, to keep us
moving forward.

I would like to find out more about the curriculum at the Chinese school.
In particular, I like to know about the skill level of the phonetic
(traditional) Mandarin classes.

How many classes are there for the phonetic track? My son is in
kindergarten, but he already has a solid foundation with the phonetic system
from our private tutor. Is the curriculum going to provide enough challenge
for him?

I want more language immersion in the classroom. Is the class taught only
in Mandarin?
SATURDAY SCHEDULE CONFLICT? said 1/1/2014 10:59:28 PM :
Thank you!
I'm relieved that Kitty responded!

We have lots of schedule conflicts in our school families. I hope you find it comforting that our teachers are used to (& good at) juggling with the kids extracurricular schedules.

My son has boy scout & daughter has soccer, and so, they miss school more than we like. Well, they catch up & they go again. Thank goodness for make up quizzes & exams.

Well, if you think of any other questions, please shoot them over. Chances are that we are dealing with the same issue(s) in other families.

Nice to hear back from you, and that the internet has brought you to us!

CLASS FOR BEGINNING OLDER STUDENT? said 1/1/2014 10:48:42 PM :

Dear S,

Thanks for looking us up. I'm following up to see if your email has been
If not, I must apologize. It must have been overlooked.

To be safe, I hope you don't mind that I treat this as a new inquiry.

You have a good concern for your 9 years-old son. Personally, I'd say it
depends on which track you'd choose for him:
If phonetic (pinyin), he can starts at level 1 or even 2 (if he has some
exposure to Chinese)
If symbolic (zhuyin), he will need to understand the basics before he gets
comfortable in more advanced classes beyond K

We are very used to having an age gap in a class since we do place students
based on skills more than age.
The good news is, in your case, the older a student is, the faster they will
learn basic grammar/vocab and thus a possibility to skip a grade after the
basic is down. They must just have to make up the pronunciation portion of
language learning at a faster pace if skipping.

Hope I answered your question. Please feel free to come by and experience
how our classes are run for yourself. We offer free trial lessons. The
visitor request is attached.

Also, do you mind letting us know how did you hear about us at South Bay
Chinese School?

Best Regards,

Most of our students are active with extracurricular events (soccer, baseball) on Saturdays. Since our classes is basically only ~$7/hr, & that becoming comfortable & fluent in a language is multi-year process, most families (like my 2 kids) just start & come as they can.
